The slaver eased the barrel away from Bea’s head. “Ye will really let us fly out of here unharmed?”

Grady nodded. “Release your hostage and I’ll comm my ship. You have my word as captain they won’t attack your craft, so long as your vessel takes no threatening action against ours.”

The marauder’s wristband chimed again. “Maz, where are ye? We’re preppin’ for departure. Get your butt to the freighter.”

The man looked Grady in the eye. He flicked his gaze to Zoe, his expression uncertain, then seemed to make up his mind. “Okay, ye have a deal.” He hoisted the pistol above his head, barrel angled at the ceiling, and removed his other hand from Bea’s neck.

Grady motioned with his carbine. “Go. I’ll contact my ship as soon as you’re out of sight.”

He reached forward and took Bea by the arm, gently pulling her toward him, while Zoe kept the raider covered. Maz took a long look at them, cursed, then shoved his gun into his waistband. He bent and helped the other, now semi-conscious slaver to stand, his arm encircling her shoulders. The pair turned, the woman moaning in pain, and shuffled down the corridor.

“Let them go,” Grady said, as Zoe tracked their movements, her finger brushing the trigger. She gritted her teeth, lips pursed, but nodded and relaxed her stance.

“Tara, copy?” Grady commed.

“Go ahead.”

“The remaining slavers are about to lift off. Do not fire on the freighter unless they make a hostile move toward Adventurer. I repeat, do not open fire. I agreed they could leave the station if they released Bea unharmed.”

“Understood,” Tara replied, her tone terse. “Mal will monitor their weapons status, though I hate to let those slimebuckets get clean away. We’re docked and the captives and troopers are boarding now. Mbeki told me what happened. Are the two girls okay?”

“Affirmative. We’re heading back to Adventurer.”

Followed by Bea and her friend, with Zoe bringing up the rear, Grady led the way to the stairwell. He pointed out the trip wire, and all four eased their way over it, then clambered up the steps.

“Hold on,” Grady said when they reached the common room. He hurried over to the wounded raider, kneeled to check her pulse, and pushed to his feet, shaking his head. “She’s gone.”

“That’s our cue to scram, too,” Zoe said. “No knowing for sure if all the hostiles have abandoned the station. I’ve had enough of this crappy hideout.” Grady nodded and gestured for her to take point, as he fell back to protect their rear. The group dashed along the now silent hallways and were soon at the airlock.

Mbeki and another trooper had assumed defensive positions on either side of the hatchway, laser rifles at the ready. “Captain,” the sergeant waved and called out when he caught sight of the four hurrying figures, “I’m relieved to see you all safe and sound. The other former prisoners are all on board and being checked by your doctor, aided by Professor Chalmers and her assistant.”

“Good,” Grady said, as he gestured for Bea and her friend to precede them in traversing the short airlock.
